Southern University System partners with BetterMynd to extend reach of online mental health services for students, employees

The Southern University System today announced its partnership with BetterMynd which makes personalized mental health services more accessible to students at Southern University and A&M College, Southern University at New Orleans and Southern University Shreveport. Students will now have greater options for how they can access much-needed mental health support. In addition to in-person counseling, students at participating campuses and employees across the System can receive BetterMynd’s 50-minute online therapy sessions and access a 24/7 on-demand crisis and support line to receive immediate support.

"We know there's a population of students on our campuses that aren't seeking traditional in-person therapy, but that doesn't mean they don't need mental health support. Additionally, many students rely on social media messaging and participate in ‘self-diagnosis,’ said Dr. ValaRay Irvin, executive director of the University Counseling Center at Southern’s Baton Rouge campus. “There is no replacement for meeting with an educated and experienced and licensed counselor who can equip you with the tools you need to thrive. The ability to now offer our students, faculty and staff the opportunity to engage with a licensed counselor and receive therapy online through BetterMynd is absolutely critical to ensuring that members of the SUS community are receiving the support that they deserve."

Southern University System students, faculty and staff will now have access to 50-minute individual counseling sessions online from BetterMynd’s diverse network of licensed and insured mental health clinicians. In less than five minutes, students, faculty and staff can register and schedule an online therapy session at bettermynd.com. To date, BetterMynd has partnered with more than 100 colleges and universities nationwide to make mental health resources more accessible to the increasing numbers of college students experiencing mental health challenges.

“Knowing that BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) college students are less likely to seek out mental health services because they are unaware of available resources or concerned about stigma, we are wholly committed to offering students a more private and convenient option of online therapy through our diverse counselor network,” said Cody Semrau, founder and CEO of BetterMynd. “We are excited to partner with the Southern University System to meet the growing mental health needs of theand hopefully make it easier for more students to seek treatment for their mental health concerns.”
